We are beyond ecstatic to share this video and song from the Solar Sound retreat with you!
At the Solar Sound Men’s Electronic Music Production Retreat in Costa Rica in February 2020, 55 men from around the world came together to create ecstatic electronic music.
This is how it went down: Starting in a class lead by David Satori of Beats Antique and Dirtwire, we created the foundation of a collective song, which we added more and more layers to throughout the week, culminating in hip hop verses from several super inspired brothers and a music video of us having the best time of our lives, creating the song, dancing in the jungle, and gettin down!
At the same time, the Women at the Shakti Sound retreat were also making music and videos on the other side of Costa Rica during a timely half-moon phase of the month. We were inspired by Shakti Sound’s music video from their first retreat, and wanted to have something special to share with our dear sisters, future and past Solar Sound brothers, and with the world.
The chorus of this song is sung by Tzutu Kan (a balam ajpu member), one of the teachers at Solar Sound, who is an indigenous Tz’utujil Mayan hip hop artist from Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. In the song, he is saying the names of all the indigenous tribes of Costa Rica, to call them in, honor them, thank them, and connect with them:
Tzutu’s Verse: Chorotegas Cabécares, Bribris, Ngäbe, Térrabas, Borucas, Huetares, Malekus, Kin siq'ij li a b'i iwonojel.
We have decided that all funds raised from the sales of this song will go to Tzutu’s non-profit organization which teaches music, art, and language revitalization to indigenous Mayan children in his homeland.
A note on the School of Mayan Hip Hop:
“Within the “Caza Ajaw.” School, elements of Hip Hop are reconfigured to create
alignment between Hip-Hop culture and Mayan culture. Caza Ajaw teaches Hip-Hop as
having three elements (Rap, Painting and Music) corresponding to the three stones
traditionally used to make a hearth (or xkub’) in Mayan culture. The use of the xkub’
hearthstones recontextualizes the elements of Hip-Hop from a specifically Maya
perspective. The songs taught in the school reflect the goals of language revitalization within the Maya Movement – encouraging children to use the language among themselves, the use of
Mayan languages in new domains, and an emphasis on the connection between language
use and cultural knowledge.”
So much love and stoke went into the making of this song and this video!
